8.8 million people over-indebted as household debt grows for 26th consecutive month

New report from the Centre for Social Justice finds that household debt has soared by more than £34bn in less than three years, exceeding UK national debt in all but three months.

The Financial Conduct Authority is warning customers of three debt management firms - Sterling Financial Security Limited, Haydon Associates Debt Management Consultants Limited, and Clear View Finance Limited - to check their debt situation with their creditors and find out exactly what they owe.

Complaints about payday loans rose by nearly a half during 2014/2015

Annual review from the Financial Ombudsman Service also reports that 63 per cent of new complaints were about payment protection insurance (PPI) despite the total number of PPI complaints falling by about half.

Half a million more people summonsed for non payment of council tax in 2013/2014

Independent reports on response to freedom of information request revealing that, following abolition of council tax benefit, summonses for non-payment of council tax increased by 30 per cent in local authorities requiring minimum payments, whilst the increase was 9 per cent in local authorities that provided support for the full council tax bill.

New debt law comes into force in Scotland

Bankruptcy and Debt Advice (Scotland) Act introduces a suite of measures, including the Minimal Asset Process, which offers debt relief quickly and at less than half the cost of an application for bankruptcy under the previous equivalent scheme for those on low incomes.

New working draft of Insolvency Rules

Following responses to a previous consultation, the Insolvency Service has drafted a further working draft of new Insolvency Rules which will replace the Insolvency Rules 1986 and all its amendments, and are intended to come into force in April 2016.
