Newport City Council faces significant challenges in delivering services to older people

New report from the Care and Social Services Inspectorate finds that there has been a culture of responding to a crisis rather than working in a proactive person centred way, and that there has been a failure to complete timely reviews which allowed people to remain in situations which were not fulfilling their outcomes and in some cases putting them and others at considerable risk.

Older people being hit by ‘double whammy’ of cuts to community heath and social care services

New figures released by Age UK show that, over the past 10 years, spending on social care services for older people has fallen by 34.2 per cent, and as a result, frail older people are without the help they need to stay well at home and end up having to go A&E, while others find themselves stranded in hospital because there aren’t enough social care and community health services to allow them to be safely discharged.

Employment Allowance (Care and Support Workers) Regulations 2015

New statutory instrument extends the national insurance contributions employment allowance to individuals who employ a care and support worker, allowing them to reduce their national insurance liability by up to £2,000 a year from 6 April 2015.

Only 14 percent of councils pay their homecare providers the recommended minimum price

New report from the United Kindgom Homecare Association - which recommends a minimum price for homecare of £15.74 per hour - finds that the average price paid by councils to their independent and voluntary sector homecare providers ranged from £11.35 per hour in Northern Ireland to £14.28 per hour in Wales.
