Plaid Cymru will abolish social care charges for elderly and those with dementia

Shadow Health Minister Elin Jones said the goal would be achieved through a phased approach - firstly, free non-residential personal care for older people; secondly, nursing and residential care charges for those with dementia will be abolished; and thirdly, all remaining social care charges for the elderly would be abolished during a second term of government.

Tenfold increase in number of Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards applications during 2014/2015

Extended deadline for people to claim for their care being funded by Welsh NHS

The Welsh government has announced that the deadline for making retrospective claims for continuing healthcare in Wales has been extended, and potential claimants now have until October 31 2015 to register their intent to make a claim for continuing healthcare costs which were incurred between August 1 2013 and September 30 2014.

Home visits to elderly people should last for at least half an hour

New guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence says that home care workers should make sure their support focuses on what people can or would like to do rather than a 'one size fits all' service, for example, if a person can still feed themselves then they should be supported to do this rather than being spoon-fed.

In a new analysis Age UK finds that an investment of an additional sum equivalent to less than 4 per cent of the annual NHS budget of £112bn per annum would address the unmet care needs of the million-plus aged over 65 who are currently struggling to cope on their own - and help sustain the NHS at the same time.
