Are apprentices exempt from paying Council Tax?
From what I can gather an apprentice living at home with their parent(s) is exempt from non-dependent deductions. Is it the case that an apprentice with their own teneancy is exempt from paying council tax?
I’ve had a look around and found conflicting information.
Thanks.
The only way I can see the apprentice would not be liable (if they were a tenant) is when the landlord is liable. The most common example of this is when they are tenants in non self contained accommodation with other tenants who have separate lettings agreements.
Apprentices are also one of the groups who are disregarded for council tax discounts purposes. This would be when they were living with someone who is liable to pay council tax and who qualifies for the 25% discount . That person would carry on getting the 25% discount. Hope this helps.
