Housing costs when in hospital

Hello,

When someone is in hospital - can anyone confirm whether UC housing costs end after 52 weeks (like HB does), or whether they end after 6 months? What I read seems to suggest the latter but just want to be sure.

You are unfortunately correct. See paragraph 9 of Schedule 3 to the UC Regs. Only those absent due to domestic violence get longer.

Damn, thanks for confirming though Charles. That’s a huge issue for people sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

Do you happen to know if staying at home for 1 night ‘resets’ the 6 month period as it did with housing benefit’s 52 weeks?

I think it would reset it, as they won’t have been absent for 6 months, which is what is needed under the regulations (similar to what was required under HB).
