Hi, one of our clients lives in HA property with high service charges (general ones associated with sheltered schemes).  They have some rent arrears, and the HA have applied for deductions from the client’s JSA.  He’s happy for £3.55 to be taken but doesn’t want them to take an extra £10pw for ongoing service charge.  The HA has told us that the DWP is “trialling” covering rent shortfall.  Anyone know anything about this?

Hi - just seen this - not heard of any trial but you’ll know that some service charges (eg heating, water) which are not eligible for HB can be deducted from IS where arrears are being collected?

And locally our Jobcentre sometimes deducts from IS to make up shortfall due to HB overpayment recovery!  I’m in two minds about this as I don’t think it’s technically legal but it does help some of our less organised residents remain in their homes.
