Treatment of “Get Ready For Work” allowance
Lone parent in receipt of Income Support under the “old rules” and still receiving applicable amounts for 2 children. One child is 18 and child benefit still in payment. She has gone on to a training programme and receives a “Get Ready For Work” allowance £55 per week, and child benefit continues for the duration of the GRFW allowance, and for 20 weeks thereafter. Income Support has been reduced because they have taken the GRFW into account upto the level of the childs applicable amount.
My understanding of this allowance was that it was introduced to bring young people following the training route into line with young people continuing relevant education and receiving Educational Maintenance Allowance, which is disregarded for Income Support purposes. Should the GRFW allowance be wholly disregarded?
Do any of my learned colleagues on this forum have any experience of this allowance and its treatment for means tested benefits.
I have answered my own enquiry after a little digging around.
Seems that IS are correct in their treatment of the GRFW allowance.
However if the client was receiving CTC for the young person and not IS then the GRFW payment would be disregarded!!
I have to get ready for work of a morning, why can’t I get an allowance?
