As rightsnet users will know, the Government has launched a consultation on DLA for working age disabled people that will rename the benefit Personal Independence Payment and introduce a new assessment from 2013 for all claimants - but with the predetermined aim of cutting the amount of DLA available by 20%.

To inform our response to the consultation, Disability Alliance is also carrying out research on DLA to ensure a thorough investigation of the issues involved aiming to provide an in-depth analysis of DLA use, disabled people’s needs and potential risks in the Government plans.

Our research survey - which is open to disabled people, their carers and advice workers - is available @

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dlareform

Our survey closes on 10th February 2011.

We would be very grateful if rightsnet users could consider highlighting our survey to clients and/or participating in our research themselves.

Thanks very much in advance to everyone that can help.

I did it yesterday and today - took me about five hours in total and came out 10 pages long.

Sorry, I meant reading the DWP consultation paper and answering all the questions in it.

If you haven’t read it, you must: bits of it (tucked away in the text) are quite scary.

Could you point us towards some of those bits?

Firstly to Joanna, I’ve taken your comment that our research questionnaire is a “heavy duty jobbie” in the spirit that it was intended and must thank you for taking the time to respond to it.

Of necessity, our questionnaire includes all the 22 questions posed in the Government’s DLA reform consultation as well as raising other issues that it omits.

For those who may prefer to complete our research questionnaire in a different format to the one online @
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dlareform  I’ve now attached a word version of it.

After completion, this can emailed to our Director of Policy Neil Coyle @ .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or posted to us.

In relation to Gareth’s point, there are a number of worrying proposals within the Government’s consultation.

Not least these include taking a greater account of aids and adaptations (including at how a disabled person can get around using a wheelchair) and laying emphasis on the “objective assessment” of a person’s needs based on the report of an “independent healthcare professional” (undoubtedly employed by Atos).

Disability Alliance is aware of the difficulties the length to our DLA survey questionnaire has caused some rightsnet users.

The reason it is so long is that we want as strong a response as possible - and to make sure we cover as many angles as possible in defending DLA. The issue is, of course, not simple, and requires some level of detail/length in order to cover all the issues needed.

However, we have now edited it to include just our questions -

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dlareform

- with a further survey including just the questions the Government asked in its formal consultation -

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dlareformgovtquestions

Also attached are separate word versions of both surveys that after completion can be emailed to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or posted to us.

This may help some people focus on just the questions they wish to answer - although it makes the analysis a little more complex (having two surveys in effect).

The closing date for our consultation is 10 February 2011.

Thanks very much again to all rightsnet users and/or their clients that can help.
