Well this is me being lazy; please excuse me. An afterthough while I’m hunting for summat else…

We had a session with a local JCP chap last week who briefly discussed “household” payments rather than individual payments. He used an example of an 18 year old who would currently claim on his own now being paid as part of a single household payment.

Is that true?

Fair to say I haven’t read the regs for a while but I had drawn an analogy between “benefit unit” and “family”; it would seem that might be mistaken.

Can anyone confirm or deny chappies example?

Same as at present -unless they are a ‘qualifying young person’ the 18 yr old isn’t part of the parent’s claim - Reg 5 (which mirrors Child Tax Credit Regs) defines ‘qualifying young person’

Some DWP staff have started talking about ‘assessment units’ instead of households in order to ‘avoid confusion’. UC doesn’t lump everyone under the same roof together - there can still be non dependents, such as grown up children, friends etc, who claim in their own right

If memory serves, isn’t the phrase “assessment unit” one that was used in the supp’ ben’ regime?

We are heading for a Jargon Jamboree of grim proportion.
