A client who is in treatment for cancer in on SSP. He has a mortgage but his property has been struck by fire recently and is not habitable. Insurance not paying for alternative accommodation. He had to move into a caravan. I believe this clt can claim Income Support but would this enable him to claim for housing benefit for alternative (second home) accommodation while the situation is being resolved?

He can make a homeless application with the LA, under 1996 Housing Act part vii Homelessness. He needs to show that he is vulnerable.

I am afarid many insurance companies are making it difficult to claim on their insurance, even when they should, after a fire. You might need to take this up on his behalf and find out the reason for their refusal.

Good luck.

Already tried with the council, but will persevere. Thank you.

Thanks. Yes, I expect we can get him through on reg 7 (4) given that the fire has done sufficient damage…
