Child Benefit & Tax Credits & Housing Benefit
Just looking for a second opinion.
We have a client who has two children, 17yrs old Daughter (College) and 1yrs old Son, her 17yrs old Daughter stayed on in College straight after leaving secondary education but our client was late providing the paperwork, and subsequently is currently only receiving Tax Credits and Child Benefit for one child i.e. Daughter is studying GCSE’s at College, consequently the residents Housing Benefit award only contains an applicable amount for one child.
Our Client would like Tax Credits, Child Benefit and Housing Benefit to include an amount for both children.
I can’t see any information regarding a time limit for requesting for Tax Credits and Child Benefit to be reinstated?
Could you please provide some clarity.
Thanks
An advantageous change of circumstances usually has to be reported within 1 month to be backdated to the date of the change, otherwise it will only take effect from the date the change was notified. It can be backdated more than 1 month provided it was within 13 months and there are good reasons for the delay in notifying.

This is true for HB, but CB and CTC are different:
Child benefit requires a new claim for each child, and can be backdated up to a maximum of 3 months.
Child Tax Credit would be a change of circumstances, and can only be backdated for a month. However, the month backdating is given even if reported more than a month after the birth.
