Budget Loan
Wed 30-Apr-08 10:23 AM

Please can someone give me advise, a young tenant was offered a property, she was in receipt of income support as a single parent she applied for a budget loan and was accepted. She moved into the new property with a partner she informed the dwp who suspended her income support and we completed a tax credit application form. Can she keep the budgeting loan which she received while still on Income support?

I have searched and searched in vain through CPAG handbook for this scenario. However harking back to my days as a Social Fund Officer , she would still be entitled to the loan , as she was entitled at the date of claim , but we would ask her to arrange an alternative repayment method , but keep the debt on file until such time as she becomes entitled to a suitable benefit again from which deductions can be made, in case she doesn't make any repayments whilst not entitled to benefits.
If I was you I would phone the SF dept locally and ask their advice not mentioning any names. In case there have been changes in the last 10 years!!!

I don't know about Wales but in England all the social fund is now dealt with in one office that is neither "local" or contactable. We have terrible trouble getting through for clients and end up having to send most of them round to the local MP's office who seem to have some magic number that enables them to get through!!

I don't mean one office for the whole country of course!! Just that the Social Fund offices in England are now set up in districts.
