I have a client in receipt of a bursary. She is a lone parent and in the final year of a university course. A compulsory requirement of the course is to work for 16 hours.

Will this count as remunerative work for Working Tax Credit purposes?

The definition seems to be what is paid work. I would argue that my client is in paid work because it is a compulsory part of the course and the bursary would not be paid if she didn't work.

Therefore worth making a claim?

It's a shame, but no.

See http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/tctmanual/TCTM02403.htm#2

and CPAG p1347
