Income Support and buying property
Mon 09-Jun-08 04:07 PM

Another awkward capital question!

My client is due to inherit £100k from her mother who is terminally ill. My client is currently on Income Support and receives HB/CTB for her rented accommodation.

I have advised that as soon as she receives this money she will nolonger be entitled to means-tested benefits however she would like to know If she would be entitled to Income Support again if she uses this money to buy a flat which she then lives in.

I would have thought that she would be seen as depriving herself of capital to gain benefits.

she is allowed to buy somewhere to live, and thus, in fact, will be depriving herself of capital to REDUCE her benefit entitlement, since of course she will no longer be entitled to housing benefit

after that, it surely depends on the price of property in your area ... but these days (even in a falling market) you probably wouldn't get much change out of £100K for somewhere worth living in....
