JSA Claims
Tue 06-May-08 09:13 AM

I have a client who is hoping to do some work while claiming JSA. They are going to work less than 16hrs /week and probably not all that regularly. The query was whether the amount earned would end the claim, if they earned £300.00 for 12 hours work on one week would they then have to reapply for JSA the following week or would the claim continue even if they were not actually paid JSA.

thanks.

Wow! That's a good hourly rate! Your client would need to inform the jobcentre of the part time work and fill in the associated paperwork (used to be A15C and a B7). Earnings of £300 would disqualify your client from recieving JSA for that week, but their claim should remain open; because they are still only working for twelve hours they are still "actively seeking and available for employment" as required.
A couple of points to note however; the money is only taken into consideration when your client actually recieves the money; such as if they worked a month in hand. Also, if your client is self employed they can have these earnings averaged over a longer period of time with the benefit being adjusted accordingly.
If your client signed off for that week, and then re-claimed immediately afterwards they would disrupt qualifying periods for support such as Housing Benefit run-on and the Job Grant...or whatever it's called these days.

It is a very good hourly rate! Thanks for your reply, neither I (or her local Jobcentre) could confirm it.
