Being Green. IT Query - Academy.
Mon 09-Jun-08 09:04 PM

I’m sorry if this doesn’t fit in this forum, but I don’t know where else I’d get an answer.

We use Academy - a quite basic version, but I don’t know much about it. Anyway, our letters are printed in a standard, unalterable font from the Correspondence window, on to headed paper. We haven’t got ProPrint or anything like that.

Our printers are basic laser printers, but they have the facility to print double-sided. Academy letters used to be printed on one side of each sheet only - we got through reams of paper. I asked our IT people to set things up for Academy to print double-sided. They did. It worked. Almost 50% paper saving - great.

Now I want to go a stage further: to save on headed paper. I want only the first sheet of each Academy letter to be headed paper, the rest to be plain. Our printers have another facility: ‘First page different’. So I want to put headed paper in the manual feed tray of the printers, plain in the bottom tray, and have Academy set up to take the first sheet of each letter from the manual feed tray and the rest from the bottom tray.

‘Double-sided’ and ‘First page different’ will work for Word, Excel, etc, ‘Double-sided’ will work for Academy, yet our IT people are telling me ‘First page different’ won’t work for Academy. They say we need ProPrint for this. I think they’re wrong. Am I right?

I haven't got a clue! lol

Might be better to ask your question on HBinfo which is used more by LA advisors/assessors than rightsnet.

www.hbinfo.org

Your LA has to subscribe before you can access the forums. A lot of LA's are already subscribed and I'm sure most, if not all, will recommend it.

You don't know our lot, then! I emailed a link to this site around - got no response from any assessors or managers, except for one manager: 'I think it's best to keep to Complinet.'

Two replies so far:

From Hereford:

They may be right.

Don't know the technicalities but I know we only have headed paper on first page & have ProPrint set up on our Academy prinitng.

From West Dorset DC:

We moved on to Proprint several years ago now but immediately prior to this we were using 'Print Bin' commands within the Header of each customised Academy template to achieve exactly what you're looking for. I seem to remember there was some setting up within the Academy Printer parameters and with the printer itself so that the 'Print Bin' command in the template knew which printer tray to choose from.

From what I can remember we certainly did this for the 'End Of Year' letters and possibly for ongoing ones aswell.

Hello again, Tony

I don't suppose you could ask the W Dorset person if they could possibly see if there's anybody in their IT section who can remember what the exact steps are to my solution?
