I have a client who is receiving Child Tax Credits for his 16 year old son who is in full time education. If his son claims Contribution based ESA via ESA in youth will the ESA count as income for the Child Tax Credits?The son is the father's only child.

If the son claims benefits in his own right ( which he will by claiming ESA(Y) ) all the benefits awarded to dad for his son ( Child Benefit , Child Tax Credit ) will cease ;
we usually do a 'better-off' calculation to check the financial impact on the household budget so family understand impact before young person goes ahead and makes a claim for benefit - some families go ahead either because financial impact not important to them or because the young person wants to be treated as an independent person - others wait until the young person has to make a claim at age 19 ;
