JSA/HB for couple
Wed 25-Jul-07 03:14 PM

A quick query:

A couple have just left Uni. They are getting married in September and want to move to London to live together once married.

He will be looking for a job straight away, but will need some kind of financial support in the meantime.

She has a full-time education course lined up (not sure yet if classed as Higher Education, but think it's run by a University and there would be some kind of financial support during study).

I think I am correct in saying he could still claim JSA and HB. Would he claim in own right or as a couple? Would the JSA & HB be assessed based on couples rate personal allowances?

Thanks

Are they living together in the same household now? If so, they're a couple and they'll have to claim benefits as a couple. As to what benefits they might be entitled to, you'll find all you need to know about the rules for claiming benefits in CPAG's Welfare Rights Handbook.
