Sure Start Maternity Grant for 15 yr old? Thu 07-Oct-04 09:32 AM
Hi, I've been approached by a 15 year old (16 four months after the birth next year) who is pregnant and living at home. She is not in school and attending a young mother's project. Her mother receives IS. I'm wondering whether if her mother is entitled to claim SSMG on behalf of her daughter (she would not qualify in her own right as she has no entitlement herself for a qualifying benefit). Hope you can help me, Sue.

Mum can claim SSMG when 15 year old is 29 weeks pregnant Mum should also tell Inland Revenue Tax Credits (assuming she has been migrated) so she can get milk tokens for young person.
When baby born either young person or mum can claim Child Benefit for baby.
Young person not entitled to claim IS until she is 16 but parent entitled to extra IS (or Child Tax Credit) for baby.
