No access to public funds/ what to claim?
Tue 09-Jan-07 04:08 PM

Hi all
Briefly, husband has access to public funds and claims CTC and CB for his three children. Wife does not have access to public funds. Husband is a full time student in further education- similar course to A Levels.

Is it the case that he can't claim IS because he will not be treated as a lone parent.

He can't claim JSA because he is a full time student. The course finishes in July so he is reluctant to go part time?

Any thoughts about entitlement to IS would be appreciated.

Sadly, I'm sure your feelings are right. They get you coming and going on this one.

Well there's Child Tax Credit of course, plus a Student Loan.

There are various means tested grants available to student households now.

It may be worth taking a look at:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/fs/en

Where it tells you that:

Grants for living costs
Around half of all full-time students are also likely to be eligible for a yearly Maintenance Grant of up to £2,700 for 2006/2007 (£2,765 for 2007/2008). This grant is non-repayable.
